Bald Eagle Nest Watch: Updates from Our 5 Live Cams

In this week’s WildWatch Weekly blog post, we’re bringing you the latest updates on the bald eagle nesting season as seen through our live cameras. This year, we’re thrilled to be broadcasting from five different bald eagle nests across three states, giving you an up-close look at these incredible birds as they raise the next generation. With nesting season now in full swing, we’ll share the latest activity, from egg incubation to nest building, and what to expect in the coming weeks!

Pittsburgh Hays Bald Eagles: A Season Without a Nest

The Pittsburgh Hays bald eagle nest has long been a favorite among eagle watchers, offering an intimate view into the lives of these majestic birds. However, this nesting season is unlike any other. On September 8, 2023, tragedy struck when the well-established Hays nest, which had been home to the eagles for over a decade, suddenly collapsed. Heavy rains and strong winds weakened the massive nest, sending it crashing to the ground. The collapse left many wondering—would the Hays eagles rebuild, or would they leave the area entirely?

As the fall progressed, there was reason to hope. By December, signs of a possible nest rebuild emerged, bringing excitement to those following the Hays eagles. A new female appeared, forming a bond with the long-time resident male, “Dad.” The pair was seen carrying sticks and interacting in ways that suggested they might establish a new nest. However, as quickly as the activity began, it faded. The female disappeared, and while Dad was seen perched in familiar spots, no significant nest-building continued.

Now, as nesting season is fully underway, it has become clear—there will be no Hays bald eagle nest this year. Unlike previous seasons filled with eggs, hatchlings, and feedings, this year’s camera feed shows a much quieter scene. Without a nest in place, the likelihood of breeding in the area this season is nonexistent. While it’s disappointing for eagle enthusiasts, nature often follows its own unpredictable path. The hope remains that in the coming years, we may once again see a thriving bald eagle nest return to Hays.

United States Steel Corporation Bald Eagles: A New Chapter Begins

This nesting season at the United States Steel Corporation bald eagle nest has been one of change, excitement, and new beginnings. The biggest development came with the arrival of a new female, Stella, who displaced the long-time resident female, Clair. This territorial shift was a dramatic turn for the nest, as Clair had been a familiar presence for years. However, Stella quickly proved to be a strong and capable mate, bonding with the resident male, Irvin, and establishing herself as the new queen of the nest.

Despite the change in leadership, the nesting season has been a success so far. For the first time in this nest’s history, the pair is incubating three eggs, marking a significant milestone. This accomplishment speaks to the strength of the new pair bond between Irvin and Stella and gives hope for a thriving eagle family in the weeks ahead. If all goes well, eaglets should begin hatching soon, bringing even more excitement to the nest.

With the lack of activity at the Pittsburgh Hays bald eagle nest, the United States Steel nest has become even more popular among eagle watchers. Many who once tuned in to Hays have now shifted their attention to this nest, eager to follow the progress of Irvin and Stella’s first nesting season together. The live stream has been buzzing with viewers eager to catch a glimpse of egg turnings, food deliveries, and the careful dedication of the parents. As hatching time approaches, anticipation continues to build—this nest is truly one to watch in 2025!

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Bald Eagle Cam: A Season of Unexpected Twists

This past fall, PixCams installed a new live-streaming bald eagle camera at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Western New York, bringing eagle enthusiasts an up-close look at these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. This marked a significant milestone for the refuge, as it was the first live camera at the site since 2003. The excitement was short-lived, however, as just weeks after the camera was installed, nature took an unexpected turn—the nest tree was brought down by a powerful storm.

Despite the setback, the resident eagle pair wasted no time in rebuilding their home. Viewers watched as the dedicated pair gathered sticks and constructed a new nest nearby, demonstrating the resilience and determination bald eagles are known for. As nesting season approached, anticipation grew—would we see eggs in the newly built nest? However, as the weeks passed, concerns began to rise. The female eagle was noticeably absent, with only occasional sightings of the male near the nesting site.

Unfortunately, with the female missing, no nesting activity took place this season. While the lack of a successful nesting attempt was disappointing, the camera still provided valuable insights into the behavior and challenges wild bald eagles face. Eagle watchers remain hopeful that the male will attract a new mate, and perhaps next season will bring the return of a thriving nest at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. Until then, the camera continues to offer a window into the daily lives of these incredible birds as they navigate their ever-changing environment.
