Big Brown Bat Colony Camera - WLT
Live from the Barn: Big Brown Bat Colony at the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwartz Property
Welcome to a rare glimpse inside the hidden world of big brown bats! This live streaming camera is located in the barn at the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwartz property in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Two cameras are mounted high in the barn’s interior, pointed toward the roof crest where a colony of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) roosts. These bats use the upper structure of the barn as a safe and warm place to rest during the day and raise their young in the summer months.
Big brown bats are one of the most common bat species in Pennsylvania and play a vital role in our ecosystem. Each night, they consume thousands of insects—including crop pests and mosquitoes—providing a natural form of pest control. By observing this colony in real time, we gain a better understanding of their behavior, roosting habits, and seasonal activity patterns. This kind of insight is especially important at a time when bat populations across North America are under threat from habitat loss and diseases like white-nose syndrome.
This camera project is part of a broader initiative to promote wildlife conservation and education through technology. We hope this live stream inspires curiosity and appreciation for these misunderstood mammals while contributing to their protection. Stay tuned to watch their evening emergence, social interactions, and maybe even a glimpse of new pups in the summer!
