Live Bat Box Camera System – Big Brown Bats at the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwartz Property
Welcome to a one-of-a-kind look into the fascinating world of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus)! This live streaming bat box camera system is installed on the barn at the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwartz property in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, home to an active colony of these beneficial and often misunderstood mammals. What makes this system so unique is that it includes not only live cameras inside the barn where the bats naturally roost, but also a specially designed bat box mounted to the barn with two dedicated cameras—one at the top of the box and one at the exit.
This dual-camera setup gives viewers a complete view of the bats’ behavior—how they enter and exit the roost, socialize, and rest during the day. It’s a rare opportunity to observe bat activity both within a traditional roosting structure (the barn) and in a conservation-focused bat box designed to provide safe, supplemental habitat. These views help us better understand how bats transition between roosting sites, especially during seasonal changes or colony expansion.
Bats are essential to our ecosystem, consuming thousands of insects each night and helping to control pest populations naturally. Unfortunately, many bat populations are declining due to habitat loss and white-nose syndrome. By showcasing this bat colony in real time, this camera system supports education, research, and appreciation for a species that quietly provides enormous ecological benefits. We hope this live stream inspires viewers to learn more about bats and the simple steps we can all take to help protect them.
