The Nursery Awakens: Big Brown Bat Pups Expected Soon

A Hidden Nursery Above the Barn

High above the floor of an old barn at the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwarz Property, something remarkable is happening once again. Tucked into the warm wooden rafters, a colony of big brown bats is preparing for one of the most important moments of the year, the arrival of a new generation of pups.

For the past several weeks, our live streaming cameras have shown the colony growing more active as the females settle into their summer maternity roost. During the day, the bats cluster tightly together beneath the roofline, conserving warmth and preparing for birth. Soon, if the timing follows what we witnessed last year, the first pups of the season could arrive at any moment.

What makes this colony especially fascinating is that it is made up almost entirely of females. During the summer months, female big brown bats gather together in maternity colonies to give birth and raise their young cooperatively. Meanwhile, male bats typically roost alone or in much smaller groups elsewhere. These nursery colonies provide the warmth and protection the newborn pups need during their earliest and most vulnerable weeks of life.

Mammals of the Night

It’s easy to forget that bats are not birds at all, they are mammals.

Like all mammals, mother bats give live birth and nurse their young with milk. After birth, the tiny pups cling tightly to their mothers or remain grouped together in the roost while the adults leave at night to hunt insects. The bond between mother and pup is incredibly important. Each female returns from nighttime feeding flights and is somehow able to recognize her own pup among dozens packed closely together in the colony.

Last year, our cameras captured one of the most extraordinary wildlife moments we’ve ever documented, the live birth of a big brown bat pup inside the barn. Shortly afterward, viewers were able to watch mothers nursing and grooming their newborns in real time. Those moments offered a rare glimpse into a side of bat behavior that very few people have ever had the chance to witness.

Within just a few weeks, the pups will grow rapidly. By mid-summer, they’ll begin stretching their wings, climbing around the roost, and eventually taking their first flights out into the night sky.

A Rare Window Into an Overlooked World

Bats are among the most misunderstood animals in North America, despite playing a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. A single big brown bat can consume hundreds of insects in a single hour, helping control mosquito populations and agricultural pests naturally.

Yet most people rarely get the chance to observe bats up close. Their nocturnal lifestyle keeps much of their behavior hidden from view.

That’s what makes the Schwarz Barn Bat Cam project so unique.

To our knowledge, this remains the only publicly accessible 24/7 live streaming camera focused on an active big brown bat maternity colony. Using remotely controlled pan-tilt-zoom cameras mounted high inside the barn, we’re able to follow the bats as they move throughout the structure, adjust to temperature changes, care for their pups, and emerge at dusk each evening.

The cameras have revealed behaviors we never expected to witness so clearly. We’ve learned how dynamic the colony can be as the bats shift to different parts of the barn depending on temperature and conditions. We’ve watched social interactions, grooming behavior, nursing, and even birth itself — all unfolding quietly above our heads in a place most visitors would never notice.

Education Through Live Streaming

This project is about far more than simply watching wildlife online.

The bat colony cameras have become part of a growing educational effort led by the Westmoreland Land Trust to connect people with the natural world through science, conservation, and technology. The Land Trust continues expanding its STEM and environmental education programming, using hands-on learning experiences to help students and visitors better understand local ecosystems and wildlife.

The bat cameras offer a powerful teaching opportunity because they challenge common misconceptions about bats. Instead of fear, viewers see nurturing mothers caring for their young. Instead of “pests,” they see highly specialized mammals that provide enormous ecological benefits.

For students, families, and wildlife enthusiasts, the cameras transform bats from mysterious nighttime creatures into relatable and important members of Pennsylvania’s ecosystem.

And perhaps most importantly, the cameras inspire curiosity.

When people can observe wildlife closely, especially behavior as intimate as birth and parenting, they begin to care more deeply about protecting it.

Why These Bats Matter

Across North America, many bat species continue to struggle due to habitat loss and the devastating impacts of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has caused catastrophic declines in bat populations. While big brown bats have proven more resilient than some species, their survival still depends heavily on safe roosting sites and public understanding.

Old barns like the Schwarz Property provide critical summer habitat for maternity colonies. Preserving these spaces can make a meaningful difference for local bat populations.

Every night, these bats quietly perform essential work for our environment. They consume insects by the thousands, help maintain ecological balance, and serve as indicators of ecosystem health. Yet most people never realize they are there.

That’s why this live stream matters.

It reveals an invisible world unfolding just overhead, a world filled with motherhood, survival, cooperation, and resilience.

Watch the Nursery Awaken

As we move into the coming weeks, all eyes will be on the colony as the first pups begin to arrive. If last year taught us anything, it’s that extraordinary moments can happen at any time.

A tiny newborn clinging to its mother.
A first stretch of new wings.
A crowded nursery of pups waiting for their mothers to return at dawn.

These are scenes few people on Earth have ever witnessed live.

Now, thanks to technology, conservation partnerships, and a barn full of bats, we all can.

You can watch the live cameras and follow the story of the Schwarz Barn bat colony unfold in real time at PixCams. https://pixcams.com/wlt-schwartz-barn-bat-colony-cameras/
